Musikana

A rare glimpse of the seminal South African Afro-Rock group Harare at the height of their powers in late seventies with the tune Musikana. Originally known as the Beaters, the group was formed in the late 60's by Om Alec Khaoli, Selby Ntuli and Sipho Hotstix Mabuse. The Beaters changed their name to Harari after a 1976 sell-out tour of Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). A collaboration with Hugh Masekela in the USA fell through when Selby Ntuli died. Nonetheless the band were the first black South African group to feature on television in South Africa and later landed an American Hot 100 hit with the single Party. You can pick up the tune Musikana on the Counterpoint compilation Afrika Underground. P.S. The title credit on the video of 2003 and Kippies is incorrect.
