Music of the Spirit

Malombo Jazz Men - Gabriel 'Mabi' Thobejane & Philip Tabane, Market Café 1976 (Photo by David Marks)

One of the many projects running in my head is a comprehensive discography of Malombo, the group first formed by Phillip Tabane, Julian Bahula and Abe Cindi in the early 60s. If you haven't hear of Malombo or Tabane do yourself a favour and listen to track two from this obscure LP released in South Africa in 1977.

Swaziland Likwindla Festival (Atlantic Records, 1977)
1. Father and Son-Malombo
2. Shebokeshana-Malombo
3. Going Up-Almon's Jazz 8
4. Touch and Go-Abafana Bamaswazi
5. New Year Sikiza 77-Almon's Jazz 8
6. Idlozi-Duma & The Swazi Queens

Shouldn't that first track be "Father and Mother"? I have the Atlantic lp Malombo (Atlantic 18223) that also has "Shebokeshana" and "Father and Mother" is the second tune on Side A. Just wondering.

You're right. Someone was being creative in the typesetting department at Atlantic when preparing the cover for this LP.

Awesome!

Any chance you have Dudu Pukwana's "In the Townships"? I'm desperate for that one and it's fallen out of print again...

Have you given a listen to some of Philip Tabane's later stuff? His most recent album is Muvhango, where he got paired with a kwaito producer...very odd stuff at times.

avocado kid - I can help you out with the Dudu Pukwana album if you want. I feel your pain - it was a bitch to find
