Thanks to the invitation of Mr Mash It Up - John Baldy - I was invited to play a small selection of Afro Beat and Afro Funk. Not having played for for what seems like many years (the last time was back in 1990 whilst running my own Fruit Palace Sound System in Johannesburg), I spent quite some time deliberating on the selections whilst picking out 30 minutes of James Brown infused African funk and 30 minutes of deeper African grooves. Prior selections are one thing but always the most interesting is to see how the crowd responds and then taking it one step beyond with some tests. For me the unexpected hits for the night were Smith and Mighty's Walk On By, Twist and Crawl Dub from the Beat, She's Lost Control from Grace Jones and Allah Wakbarr from Ofo and the Black COmpany. This is a great mix Matt! It covers a lot of areas, especially those that I cycle through on my way to work. Been snappin my fingers round the office the past two days after playing this on the headphones whilst tearing through south nottingham pon pushbike.
