Zambiance!
I was too busy filling up on the great Zimbabwean pop of Thomas Mapfumo, Oliver Mtukudzi, Robson Banda, The Pied Pipers and numerous other to really take much time to investigate the sounds of Zambia. To its north the mighty rumba sounds of Congo and to the south the vibrant sway of Zimbawean jit and earthy grind of township mbaqanga. It took Globestyle to compile the first proper compilation of tunes back in the 1980s. And so here it is. Not much more to tell really except that on my only visit to Lusaka in 1990 I did spend some time at the Lusaka Music Parlour where I bought a PK Chishala record (Church Elder) and the seminal Nguashi Ntimbo's Shauri Yako. (Grumpy I will spin it at MASH IT UP!)
Zambiance! Pop Music from Zambia. Originally issued in 1989 by Ace Records on the Globestyle label. Compiled by Ben Mandelson.

Hello Mat,
An incredible album! Music from Zambia is so rare. Thanks a lot.

ah, this looks ace, but the download is already unavailable for me.
It's still there Matthew - try again.
This is a nice album, but while you were in Lusaka did you find anything by Nasil Pichen Kazembe? I have his lp Hot hits of and it is absolutely wonderful.
Ronald...the record store was very depleted with mostly cassettes...so no I didn't get the one you are talking about....
oh damn... didn't even realize you were back!
this album looks like some good stuff...
It's a nice compilation that gives a good overview and the Albert Chisala Kalusha Jr. track "Itumba" has one of the best guitar solos ever. To be honest though, I would have been much more interested in the PK Chisala album...
Mat
If you like guitar band music than I think you will like Nasil Pichen Kazembe. If you see anything by him buy it.
Hello, Matthew!
Could you re-upload this albom, please? I very want to listen "Kalambo hit parade" songs as I remember them in ZNBC's programme "Folk night" in 1987 watched on Soviet TV.
Thank you,
Oleg
