African Serenades site

I am happy to announce that a labour of love over the past two weeks (and lots of frustrating html) has finally reached fruition. This is the archive of African Serenades compilations, some which have been featured here. Now they have a dedicated site and storage thanks to a generous benefactor. But it won't be around for long so spend some time exploring and broadening your musical horizons.

EDIT: (Wed 31 Jan @10.49pm) Almost all the folders have been removed. I am trying to work out what's happening.

Heres the link. Enjoy.

Bloody hell Matt what have you done, this is going to take me WEEKS to sort out! I came to the Serenades a bit later, so there's tons here for me to digest...

What a great way to begin my Monday (just don't tell my boss)!

This is FAN-bleedin-TASTIC! Thanks so much for sharing all this amazing music.
Mind you, the amount of time i'm gonna be spending hunched over my computer and/or plugged into my stereo over the next few days may well cost me my marriage!!! And certainly a fair few quid over at Sterns.....

Wax d'Afrique Vol. 1 is honored to be aka African Serenades Vol. 36. Saves on the downloading and makes Wax d'Afrique Vol. 2 incrementally closer to completion. My apologies for the delay in the production — but there have been distractions.

I can only second Abudaiyo's comment that this glorious flood of music is going to translate into me spending more at Sterns (internet purchases) and elsewhere ... c'mon jackdaw let us have ver wax afrique 2 ... and Matt .. you deserve a medal! where does all this lead to now?

The Hallelujah Chicken Run Band made my day. Classy compilations.

Hmm... Seems that the zips for volumes 29-40 (except for vol. 35) aren't available.

Still, vols 1-28 are pretty freaking cool.

Anonymous said...

Are the files already off-line? I only had time to download Vols. 1-10, and now I can't get the others.

WE HAVE A PROBLEM!!!

THE LINKS ARE DOWN EXCEPT FOR 7, 9, 35 and 39

I'm working on it but in the event that it can't be resolved there's not a lot I can do.....

all the best

i managed to download all of the volumes and could help to distribute them to folks who read this blog by posting them ALL [as a few BIG archive files] to my new yousendit.com "business account" (they just gave me a free upgrade for one month, and allow 2GB file sizes) ~ lemme know if i can be of help via the following email --> music **at** jameskirchmer.com

p.s. - while going thru and organizing the downloads i noticed that volume 4 is missing track 5 and that volume 5 is missing tracks 2 & 7 (according to the posted tracklists)... i'll reply if i come across any other missing tracks... (i've only organized up to vol. 5)

OK, this is amazing! I cannot tell you how amazing this is! I will keep an eye out for the links returning. How big is the entire file size? Maybe I can help with alternate storage....

hi: i have organized nearly all of the volumes for a re-upload that i'm taking on (yikes! ;-)... i have all of them *except* for Volume 22, which my download manager did not get for some reason... or maybe it was never posted to begin with? REGARDLESS, does anyone have this volume? If so, pretty please upload it to a file sharing site (such as rapidshare dot com) and forward the link to me via the following email: "music" at "jameskirchmer.com"

...once this volume is in hand (ideally) i'll finish uploading all of the volumes for sharing, and will post a comment HERE once that process is complete. Thanks in advance for any help... and I should also mention that I'm looking for the missing #10 track from volume #10! --> "Ujamaa Na Kujitegemea" by Mbaraka Mwinshehe)

It is good to have nice people like you who value the past, around. You rewind my memories. These collections should open the eyes of the youngsters to what real music is/was. Thank you.

regarding James Kirchmer's request for AS vol 22: i have a copy, which i'll make available, but i won't be able to upload anything till this sunday when i'm back home in quetzaltenango and have more bandwidth. i'm currently in podunk, guatemala, and my connection is at about 11 kb/sec so you can imagine the upload time.

james - i'll email you directly so you can pull the file.

thanks to whomever posted vol. 22 on sendspace :-) it's being downloaded right now ~ more to come! (a motherland motherlode, so to speak! ;-) ~ sincerely, james kirchmer

ok, vol. 22 is now in hand - so the final piece of this massive puzzle remains track #10 off volume #10 (Independence Blues) --> "Ujamaa Na Kujitegemea" - by: Mbaraka Mwinshehe (Tanzania) ~ again, anyone have this?
if so, forward it via yousendit.com to "music" AT "jameskirchmer.com" ~ thanks very much in advance (fingers crossed!)

Hi James,

I also have Vol 10 but no track 10. Does it exist?

I don't mean to sound fussy, given the wealth of incredible music on the discs, but I noticed that Vol 5 (Rob's Sparkling Guitars) is missing these two tracks:

Les Wanyika
Samba Mapangala & Orch Virunga

Is that just me, or have other people noticed their absence?

How do you access the files on soulseek? Is it soulseek.org or soulseek.com? How do you make it work?

For Soulseek you need a program that can be downloaded from www.slsknet.org. BTW I've got 38 serenades available now
