Fina Magarine (and African Rock and Roll)

Fela Kuti and his Koola Lobitas from a Vogue photo shoot in the sixties

Woman: "Mmm." ( "Mmm.")
Man: "Nde. Boni solo kitoko mpo na ndako?" ("What smells so delicious in the house?)
Woman: "Nakalingaki ngombe na mafuta ya mindele." ("I fried meat in the oil used by the whites.")
Man: "Nini? 'Margarine Fina'?" ( "Which one? 'Fina Margarine'?")
Woman: "Ehn?" (Disbelief)
Man: "Mekisa ngai moke." ( "Let me try a little.")
Woman: "Mma." (Signals him to open his mouth)
Man: "Mmm. Ya solo. Elengi, eh?" ("Mmm. Really good, no?")

Like imported margarine so too musical forms like the rumba, cha-cha-cha, twist and rock 'n roll were often seen as agents of value, modernity and power. But thats just scratching the surface when it comes to the music. Collected here for your listening pleasure is the second in my series of African Rock and Roll collections. There's a lot of Kenyan Twist, Nigerian soul and some cheesy Congolese covers. Enjoy it.

Another ace compilation with many great sides I have never heard before. Kudos to you for bringing them to a wider audience. When it comes to covers, a particular fave of mine is Rochereau's version of Let It Be, though that wouldn't have fitted this compilation's rockin' vibe.

I am confused, though, by the numbering of the African serenades series. Last one I clocked was Number 30, this is No 40 - am I missing out or just rubbish at maths?

Doh! It is late, I'm confused. You have the Rochereau cover on this compilation. Apologies. Let's regard it as the chill-out at the end of the session.

Phew, and this man does a full-time job with big commute too!! Thanks Matt, again.

My maths level is the same as Timbo's ... are there not some numbers between 30 and 40? Enlighten us please

At this stage we are missing Vol 35 and 36 are being completed by my mate Tony in Melbourne...a selection of unreleased Zimbabwean singles. Then 37 is being compiled by Grumpy Chris in Bradford and 38 and 39 are still to be allocated. Soon fulfilled. Contact me for hard copies of the missing volumes as not all of the series is available for download.
