2007 Rewound :: Bang a Drum!

Like Natasha Khan of Bat for Lashes I bang my drum each year with a roundup of favourites. In the pre-internet days when music magazines played a bigger role in discovering new and interesting sounds I always looked forward to the yearly rewind in The Wire magazine. In the absence of significance the desire grows stronger to seek out new and forgotten sounds.

And now without further ado here's my 2007 rewound selection:

01 Earth Intruders - Björk (a great return & declaration of independence)
02 Daxaar - Steve Reid Ensemble (Dakar recorded grooves 'n glitches from the jazz vet)
03 Walking - Cornish Waters (lovely bubbler from the Brownswood label)
04 The Sloganeer (Paradise) - Me'Shell Ndegeocello (the girl on the bass bounces back)
05 Trophy - Bat For Lashes (beyond the crossroads of Bjork and Kate Bush)
06 All I Need - Radiohead (too much hype obscuring the great music)
07 Neon Bible - Arcade Fire (burn it down!)
08 Get Up - Pinch (dubstep from the shadows of Burial)
09 Ana - Vieux Farka Toure (Ali's son showing a new path)
10 Bassekou - Bassekou Kouyate & Ngoni Ba (each time a delight to hear)
11 Pullo Ardo - Youssou N'Dour (when "made for the west" is no longer off target - except for the final track)
12 No Pussy Blues - Grinderman (Nick kicks out the jams with his Grinderman club-mates)
13 Family Feud - Von Südenfed (as only Mark E Smith can)
14 I Wish I Could Have Loved You More - Candie Payne (new dusty sounds from Liverpool)
15 Jimmy - M.I.A. (Kollywood trash disco!)
16 Kumina - Colombiafrica (Congo/Columbia fusion of the 1st order)
17 Tropidelico - The Quantic Soul Orchestra (Will Holland fusing cumbia, funk and tropical sounds)
18 Cabral - Orchestra Baobab (the gentlemen of Dakar rework a classic from their endless repertoire)

This is really, really great! Fantastically well sequenced and full of tunes I haven't heard and didn't know I wanted to — but do! Based on this, 2007 sounds like a better year for music than I thought!

That's great. If I could have made up a song for Steve Reid to be alive and playing it would have been the one on your mix. Sending the year out right.

Fantastic eclectic mix! Thanks for introducing me to so much new stuff. There seems to be a track between Me'Shell and Bat for Lashes that's not mentioned on the tracklisting???

This mix is awesome, especially the Steve Reid. Thanks. (Wish it was higher quality than 128, but I'm a beggar)
